Joel B Swanson was born in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, a small town nestled in the Osage Hills of Osage County. His family moved to Barnsdall where most of his adolescents was spent listening to the sounds, seeing the sights, and smelling the smells of the Petrolite Wax Plant that he lived near.
Joel grew up listening to beloved Tulsa radio superstar Jan Dean, and Lloyd Scott, as well as his father’s music collection of Jim Reeves, Hank Snow, Jimmy Dean and other pioneers of country music. Joel is a lifelong radio enthusiast, developing an interest for the technology around age 11. The young boy promptly started destroying home stereos during his attempts to build a radio studio and play DJ (much like Matt Bradley).
In 1989, at the age 16, Joel began his Tulsa radio career working for K95 on the weekends, his stay was brief as he moved to Norman to pursue his educational and mentoring desires (and boy did he get an education).
Following the tragic deaths of Trooper Matthew Scott Evans, and Oklahoma City Police Officer, Jeffrey Dean Rominger, in August of 2000, Joel became an ardent supporter of military and law enforcement. He was honored in 2002 by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, with the Chief's Distinguished Service Award, under the authority of Highway Patrol Chief Gary Adams, for his efforts in the founding of The Special Trooper Radio Fund in association with the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.
The fund placed several multi-jurisdictional radio transceivers in under equipped units, allowing for better communication between city and state officials. As a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks and an impending "war on terrorism" Joel enlisted in the United States Army, in January of 2003, and proudly served in the Military Intelligence Corp as a Signals Analyst and Assistant Protocol Officer at Buckley Air Force Base in Denver Colorado.
Following his Army days he returned to Oklahoma to spend time with his ailing father and arrived back to 71st and Yale in August of 2007, as a senior producer and fill-in voice talent. Joel now enjoys supporting theatrical arts, singing in the car and shower, traveling, and spending time with his best friend, at Grand Lake. With many adventures under his belt, Joel say's, "my life is more complete as I join the most wonderful and talented air-staff in radio, playing Today’s Best Country on K95.5FM."
